Footwork - Cognetize Your Training

It is best to attempt after sufficient repetition, memorization and form is achieved with each element of the drill you are cognetizing. Attempting to attain high associative or autonomous stage of learning is recommend before attempting to add too much cognitive load.

Cognetizing The Triangle Drills

  1. Do 5 reps of each; Open Male, Closed Male clockwise, then counter clockwise, skip male clockwise then counter clockwise
  2. Set a metronome (free app on smart phones) and see what tempo you can keep with each drill.
  3. Do one rep of each in above order then repeat order 10 times
  4. Do with your eyes closed (ensure to do in a safe space)
  5. Once you have learned some of the X Pattern swings with the stick come back and practice all variations while doing various combo's from the X Pattern.

Cognetizing The Combination Footwork Drill

  • The order of the steps in this drill do not matter. Once you have learned it will start randomizing the order of the 'chunks' listed above. Then randomize the order of each individual step....remember you must keep track of which ones you have and have not done.
  • Once you have learned some of the X Pattern swings with the stick come back and practice all variations while doing various combo's from the X Pattern.
  • If you have previous training throw a jab cross with each step, if no previous training extend your left then right hands out in front of you with each step.

Cognetizing The Hourglass Drill

  • Change the direction of the drill at all 4 points during flow
  • Once you have learned some of the X Pattern swings with the stick come back and practice all variations while doing various combo's from the X Pattern.
  •  As this is the last of the footwork drills for the Fundamental Series, try to flow through all  drills. Without pausing flow from open male & female to closed and to skip, throw in all or some of the combination footwork. this can be done in a preset order (you come up with what order you want to do) or just as a creative flow similar to the 'carrenza' which is one of the challenges later.
